Falstone : Area of Study
There is no firm evidence that Falstone was ever a township in its own right. Between the 18th and 19th centuries (but no earlier) it fell within the extensive township of 'Plashetts and Tynehead', which extended along the north side of the North Tyne, from Falstone right up to the head of the valley and the border with Scotland, an area too large to use as the basis of this study. Accordingly, a smaller, more coherent study area has been adopted, which is focussed on Falstone village and covers a 3km stretch of the North Tyne. To the north, the study area incorporates the entire catchment of the Hawkhope Burn (which flows into the North Tyne just above Falstone) extending up to a summit of 397m O.D. on Earl's Seat.
