Alwinton : Mills

Two mills are recorded at Alwinton in 1623, when they formed part of the property there sold by Theophilus, lord Howard of Walden and his wife, Elizabeth, to Henry and Robert Widdrington (NCH XV (1940), 420). One of these may have been the fulling mill in Alwinton later confiscated from Sir Edward Widdrington of Cartington, in 1654, on account of his royalist activities (Compounding Records, 372). The other mill was perhaps a corn mill.  The location of these mills, if they lay at Alwinton itself rather than Linbriggs or Barrow, is unknown.

Site Name : Barrow Mill

  • First recorded 1712
  • Last recorded c1860

The mill is first recorded in the Alwinton Parish register in 1712, however 'Linbriggs mill' has a mention in 1663 and may refer to the same site (Charlton 1996, 172).  A miller is still mentioned in the 1851 census and a trade directory from 1855. The mill still gives the impression of being in use on the first edition Ordnance Survey maps of the area, by the second (1890s) edition all signs of use have gone. The signs of the mill have largely gone but there are still the remains of the old drying kiln.
