The present day landscape of the Northumberland National Park results from several thousand years of human activity. This is evident in the wide variety of visible ancient monuments such as the homes, farms, ritual centres and burial places of our ancestors.

The National Park Authority, in close association with English Heritage and other related conservation bodies, is keen to integrate archaeological work into its established programme of landscape and ecological conservation.
